Classic Tomato Sauce for Pasta

Why it works: This is the foundation of many Italian dishes and pairs beautifully with spaghetti, penne, or rigatoni.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 800 g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil (optional)

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onions until soft and translucent.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, sugar, herbs, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes.
  6. Finish with fresh basil before serving.
